Pallagrello Nero is a black grape variety that is grown in Campania, Italy, around the Volturno river. The ancient variety, once renowned, has had a renaissance in the last few decades after nearly falling into extinction in the 20th Century. Pallagrello Nero was once a favorite of Ferdinand IV, the Bourbon King of Naples and Sicily, who had the variety planted (along with its sibling Pallagrello Bianco) in his famed Vigna del Ventaglio, or Fan Vineyard.
The vines produce small, thick skinned berries which make for an intenselyflavored wine with reasonably high alcohol and surprisingly remarkable tannins. Pallagrello Nero wines typically exhibit black fruit aromas such as plum and blackberry along with chocolate and some peppery notes.
